The movie is a reimagining of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth. In the narrative, Maqbool (portrayed by Irrfan Khan) serves as the loyal right-hand of Jahangir Khan (played by Pankaj Kapur), a formidable underworld kingpin. Much like the prophetic witches in Macbeth, two corrupt police officers (Om Puri and Naseeruddin Shah) foretell a future in which Maqbool will rise against Jahangir and seize power for himself.

Nimmi (enacted by Tabu) occupies the role of Jahangir Khan’s mistress and Maqbool’s clandestine love interest. Manipulating his emotions, she urges him to eliminate Jahangir, eventually leading to Maqbool committing a cold-blooded murder against his mentor. However, murder inflicts a heavy burden on Maqbool’s conscience, haunting him with ghostly apparitions of Jahangir’s spectre.

Guilt also takes its toll on Nimmi, driving her to the brink of madness. The tragic tale culminates in the ill-fated lovers’ demise, as they become targets of united opposition forces.

The film deftly reinterprets Shakespearean themes, painting a tale of ambition, betrayal, and consequences. In this modern-day adaptation, the characters navigate a treacherous path, ultimately succumbing to the tragic destiny that befalls them.
